Mother Day – Love remains, love never fails or dies

Grandma and I at my medical school graduation..the woman whose faith inspired me.

May I start by wishing every mother a happy Mothers Day.    Mothers are truly a blessing.

Today can be a difficult day for those who have lost a mother, a grandmother, a wife.. But I wanted to share my faith in God, a faith  that offers hope.  I will share why I believe Love transcends this life, but first I want to share what has strengthened my faith.

I lost my Grandma in January of 2016 to a brief illness with colon cancer.  After working a 12 hour shift as a doctor, I had to stop at the cemetery to talk to her.   As I sat there in the grass in my navy blue scrubs and navy blue shoes, I cried as I talked to her.   She was a major influence in my life.  I replayed voicemails I had from her as I drove to this cemetery and cried, I bawled.   It was cathartic though and here is why…

As a Catholic, as a Christian I take comfort and solace in the words of 1 Corinthians 13.  As a physician I have seen death, I have watched loved ones die, but be born into new life.

For those who have lost a mother, a grandmother… I take consolation in 1 Corinthians 13 (several different translations)
* Love is patient, love is kind. It is not jealous, it is not pompous, it is not inflated

it is not rude, it does not seek its own interests, it is not quick-tempered, it does not brood over injury,

it does not rejoice over wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth.

It bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.

* Love never fails. ( LOVE NEVER DIES)
For we know partially and we prophesy partially, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.

At present I know partially; then I shall know fully, as I am fully known.

So FAITH, HOPE , LOVE REMAIN , these three; but the greatest of these is LOVE .

I believe firstly that the love and bond between our loved ones that we share in this live transcends this life and cannot be broken.

Faith, Hope and Love REMAIN! – as difficult as it is for those who have lost a mother, a grandmother, a wife (any loved one for that matter) … that bond has not been broken. God IS Love, God loves us!  Therefore LOVE never dies!

The words of this bible passage remind me that that FAITH HOPE and LOVE “REMAIN”..when we shed our mortal coil I firmly believe that we are born into new life and in Heaven, in the presence of God, the Love we made in this life will endure and reunite us with our loved ones.

May God bless the mothers today and give strength and hope to those who have lost a mother or Grandmother that we will be reunited in Love.
